Medicare can feel overwhelming at first, which is why understanding the fundamentals is the best place to begin before comparing Medicare plan options.
Understanding Medicare
Medicare is the federal health insurance program primarily designed for adults age 65 and older. Certain individuals under 65 may also qualify due to specific disabilities or medical conditions such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
The Different Parts of Medicare
Medicare is divided into several parts, each covering different healthcare services:
-
Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.
-
Part B focuses on doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, and other medically necessary treatments.
-
Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is offered through private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare.
-
Part D provides prescription drug coverage.
Together, Parts A and B are commonly referred to as “Original Medicare.”
What is a Medicare Supplement Plan?
While Original Medicare helps pay for many healthcare expenses, beneficiaries are still responsible for certain out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
A Medicare Supplement plan, often called Medigap, is designed to help reduce those expenses. These plans work alongside Original Medicare and can help pay for costs that Medicare does not fully cover. Plan pricing varies depending on the level of coverage selected and other factors.
What is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage plans are private insurance alternatives to Original Medicare that combine Part A and Part B coverage and often include prescription drug benefits as well.
Many Medicare Advantage plans also offer additional features not typically included with Original Medicare, such as:
-
Dental coverage
-
Vision benefits
-
Hearing services
-
Wellness and fitness programs
These plans are approved and regulated by Medicare but administered by private insurance carriers.
